Rethinking PZB – Ready for the Future

Even in the era of ETCS, PZB will remain an essential part of railway operations in Germany for many years to come. Reliable and future-ready PZB onboard equipment is therefore still required – both for new vehicles and for the modernization of existing fleets.

With REDpointPRO®, proven PZB functionality is brought onto a modern technological platform. The solution is designed to meet the requirements of connected rail vehicles and enables efficient integration into existing vehicle architectures as well as ETCS retrofit projects.

One key advantage is that REDpointPRO® combines several functions in a single device. This is particularly beneficial for refurbishment projects, where additional systems can be replaced at the same time, freeing up valuable installation space and reducing overall effort. At the same time, existing safety-related information and functions within the train protection system can be leveraged for additional vehicle applications.

The modern PZB ATP complete solution

REDpointPRO® was developed from the ground up for a compact and integrated system architecture. The central unit is housed in a single 19-inch rack mount with 3U. In addition to the PZB, other safety-related functions can be integrated – including safety-related control (Sifa), roll-back protection, standstill detection and cold movement detection for ETCS applications.

REDpointPRO® goes one step further: safety-related information, which is recorded for the PZB anyway, can also be made available to other on-board systems. For example, the safe standstill information can be used for a door system without the need for additional external speed detection.

This approach also offers advantages for the safe display of speed within an ETCS on-board architecture. If, for instance, the EVC fails as a source of safe speed information due to an isolation fault, REDpointPRO® can provide the required information. This eliminates the need for additional safe speed detection involving separate sensor technology, cabling and integration.

Flexible integration into different vehicle architectures

REDpointPRO® was developed from the ground up for a compact and integrated system architecture. The central unit is housed in a single 19-inch rack mount with 3U. In addition to the PZB, other safety-related functions can be integrated – including safety-related control (Sifa), roll-back protection, standstill detection and cold movement detection for ETCS applications.

REDpointPRO® utilises existing safety-related information in multiple ways, thereby reducing hardware, cabling requirements and system complexity – without the need for additional sensors. REDpointPRO® can be adapted to different vehicle architectures – from older vehicles with predominantly hard-wired signals to modern, networked vehicles.
In addition to traditional inputs and outputs, the system supports remote I/O as well as modern communication interfaces such as Ethernet, CANopen and MVB. Via TRDP, REDpointPRO® can also be integrated into modern Ethernet-based vehicle networks. This means the PZB adapts to the vehicle – and not the other way round. Depending on the architecture, additional gateways may not be required. This offers particular advantages in retrofit projects involving heterogeneous technical set-ups.
